Everyone who follows football/soccer/futbol has a favourite team. The reason for loving, (and sometimes hating) that team are as varied as can be.
They can range from simply it being the team your father/grandfather/older brother supports
or
The first game/team you ever saw
or
The team your favorite player plays for
or
The hometown team.
For me it was simple. As a lifelong soccer fan living in Canada there was not a lot of options for following top level soccer. The NASL lived and died while I was mostly too young to notice, and by the time I was ready to search out good soccer to watch the internet and 24hr sports channels showing world soccer on demand. There would be a small section in the sports pages that might show the Premier League tables once a week. Or every so often my parents would get something mailed from relatives in the UK that would be wrapped in newspaper with the English sports section included.
Times were tough, information was sparse.
When I was 15 my parents went to London to visit family for the first time in my life. I asked for only one thing. A soccer jersey.
When they came back they handed me an ugly, white synthetic short sleeve, highly flammable ugly in retrospect jersey with HOLSTEN on the front and a small logo of a chicken on a globe (or at least that's what I thought it was).
I had never heard of the team HOLSTEN. And my dad corrected me by telling me HOLSTEN was a German Beer company. They just sponsored the team shorts. The logo in the corner was actually a cockerel on a football and the team was TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR.
Their were a lot of things I didn't know about them. Their home ground "White Hart Lane", Their nickname(s) Spurs, Lillywhites. I didn't even know where they were from until I figured out that Tottenham was a borough in North London.
Didn't matter. I was hooked. I wore that shirt proudly and my soccer friends were envious that I had a "real" jersey. I was a Spurs fan.
What you may ask does this have to do with Crystal Palace Sucking?
Crystal Palace is my best friends favorite team. His reason for selecting it will be revealed in the near future.
However the reason for this blog is to encourage people to admit that Crystal Palace Sucks.
And to collected proof of this suckage.
Ad so it begins.
